Litchfield Lane murals

Painting is going well on the garage doors on Litchfield Lane in Manchester. This striking lion was painted by artist Christine Keenan.

Two paintings on one door. On the left an homage to Van Gogh by Linda Feinberg and on the right a painting by Ronnie Bourgeois. Title: Freedom.

This is an older painting that was refurbished by Deb Funk, Stephanie Byrd and Anthony Williams.

Our fearless leader, Anthony Williams, walked me further down the lane so I could take a photo of his older mural, "The old man of the mountain". It's still in good condition as is the next one.

This painting was organized by Anthony and many of the neighborhood kids worked on it. They signed their names on the right. It was painted in 2008.

It was sad to see so much graffiti on the garage doors and buildings there, but all the places where there were murals were not tagged and looked great.  Thanks to Eagle Eyes group and Anthony Williams for leading this project.

This is another older mural, painted by Deb Curtin, that is still in great condition.

Thanks to all the artists who participated in this project.  It is still ongoing and a few more murals will be up by the end of the summer.

Summer Projects

The summer painting murals project has begun.  There are several garage doors available for painting on Litchfield Lane. Linda Feinberg, our former treasurer, who is about to leave for Idaho, completed this one, an homage to Van Gogh.  Anthony Williams, our Vice President has other garage doors already primed and waiting for the artists who signed up. Of course, the weather is a factor since we have to paint outdoors.

Anthony Williams completed his eagle for the Veterans Count project. Looks like Sylvester stayed out of the way long enough for Tony to paint.

Summer Art

Please contact our president, Stephanie Byrd if you are interested in doing a group booth.  We have a tent.

Anthony Williams is painting this eagle, sponsored by Easter Seals for the Veterans Count group. Sylvester was checking the eagle out before Anthony started painting.  He hopes to finish the painting this week and says it was more difficult than it looked.

Mural Repairs

Repairs have been completed on the garage door murals on Litchfield Lane. Unfortunately the substrate keeps peeling. This is the second time our group has repaired these murals.

Our artists at work, Anthony Williams, Deb Funk and Deb Curtin.

Great job, guys! Now we need to find some indoor murals to do for the winter months. :)

Member updates and invites

Joe Smiga along with at least fourteen other photographers will be exhibiting their photos in the lower level at the Hooksett Library from September 1st to December 31st.

Joe will also be doing a lone photo exhibit in the main level of the Hooksett library that will run the first quarter of 2016.  He plans to have 12 to 14 photos in that exhibit of pictures he took in the Canadian Rockies.

Joe took these two photos of stained glass in a friend’s home in Manchester.

Several of our members will be exhibiting at the Manchester Artist Association annual Art in the Park show.  This year the show will be held in Merrimack on September 26th, 9:30 – 4:30. The event will be held at the Abbie Griffin Park, 6 Baboosic Lake Road, Merrimack. There is ample parking behind the town hall.

Rollande Rousselle is now part of a new artist’s group in Amherst (28-1 State Route 101A). The artists are painting on site, giving classes and have a lovely gallery called Creative Ventures.  The grand opening will be on Friday, September 11th from 3-6 PM.

Some information from their website:
"In July of 2015, Creative Ventures Gallery was born. Creative Ventures exists to provide working space and to create visibility for talented local artists who gathered together with the common goal of getting more stable exposure to the public. The studio/gallery is open to the public and provides a relaxing environment, allowing the public to interact with artists. The artists work independently but come together for our united cause. On any given day several artists can be found working in their studio spaces.

Our location combines studio, gallery and classroom space all under one roof. At any one time the art represented may include oils, acrylic, watercolor, pastels or other works on paper. We also offer sculptural ceramics to the public. Our gallery space is part of each artist’s studio space. Some are paintings come right off the easel. Some artists offer art classes and workshops. There also are outside artists who teach in the classroom."

Good luck to the artists and their new venture.

Our next Friends of Art Manchester meeting is on Thursday, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. at Linda and Joe’s house, 511 Pickering Street.  We hope to have a guest who will talk to us about how we can help with the Riverwalk in Manchester and some of the downtown graffiti problems.

Project Ideas for Spring and Summer

Our winter project is gradually getting done. Paintings by Linda Feinberg and Deb Funk have been delivered to Webster House. Linda’s painting is up on the wall of the conference room.

Carolina Davison is working on getting the building that the city owns (former Latin America Center at 521 Maple Street) turned into an art center. We hope she succeeds! She has already had a fundraiser and an open house. Lots of people are interested in this project.

Several ideas were suggested for spring and summer projects, including a sketch crawl (bring your camera or sketchpad, meet somewhere, then head out, do your thing, and come back to show everybody what you accomplished afterwards). This would be both a social and art event.

Several of our artists are interested in painting more utility boxes and will be taking photos to discuss which ones with the city.

Tables will be available at Veterans Park during their concerts.  We might take a table one evening and sell some items as a fundraiser for our group.  Linda suggested we could buy notecards (Strathmore has some) and paint them to sell. Items to sell need to be fairly low prices as these are free concerts and people who attend are not bringing much money with them.

Another project from Webster House – finish up the 4’ x 8’ mural in their basement. We have some volunteers already and I’m looking forward to seeing the finished mural. Our next meeting is May 20, 2015.

Call for Artists

At the Derry Public Library we have a considerable wall space with a professional hanging system in place, and we feature the work of a different artist every month.  We also have a locked display showcase with 3 shelves.  I am always looking for great new art work to share with the community and wonder if any of you would consider hanging or displaying your work here?  Several artists could also share the space for a month.  Depending on size, there is potential for around 17 to 20 pictures to be hung.

The only month I have already booked for this year is February.  I’ll attach our Exhibit Policy which might answer other questions you have.  Otherwise of course you could email me directly.

Thank you very much for considering displaying in our space!
Susan

Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting will be on Wed. Jan. 21, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.  Please RVSP to our treasurer, Linda Feinberg, lhfeinberg@myfairpoint.net. We will be buying some refreshments and will need a head count.

Meeting agenda:

1. Welcome from President
2. Treasurer’s Report
3. Election of Officers
4. Report on Completed Projects for 2014
5. Discussion on Projects for 2015
6. Collection of Annual Dues
7. New Business

If you would like a copy of our Bylaws before the meeting, please let Linda know. She will send you a PDF file.

We have seven artists committed for our Webster House project. Sketches are due to Linda by January 15th and will be discussed at the annual meeting.  We will need to confirm everything so that we can buy the materials and start painting. If you don't paint, but would like to assist us, we will need help with photographing our final paintings and with hanging them.

To recap for those of you who have not been following the information:
Webster House has asked us to prepare paintings for 4 rooms.  We are researching the cost and possibility of doing 4' x 5' canvas panels.  These could hang from dowels or we could use grommets. (If you have experience with this, please let us know. We need your knowledge.) Webster House has been providing a safe supportive home for children in need since 1884.

Suggestions for paintings include:
Girls area - animals, nature
Boys lounge - sports, music
Dining room - NH scene, nature
Conference room - urban scene, nature

Dues remain at $5.00 annually and may be paid online with Paypal button on this site, or you may bring cash or check to the meeting.

Several of our artists will have their artwork in this show this month.  Last month, Rollande Rousselle, Judy Gelinas and Bea Bearden were included in the "Artist of the Month" group at Manchester Artists Association (photo below).

Linda Feinberg and Joe Smiga will be at Table 53b in the gym at the Memorial High School Craft Fair on Saturday.

Fall Fundraiser

Our artists have accepted the challenge of painting small canvas boxes for a fundraiser.  They will be for sale soon.  This box was painted by Linda Feinberg.

We plan on selling the boxes for $12.  More photos and information will be posted when available.

If you have ideas for winter projects for our artists, please let us know. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 22nd.  We would enjoy working with students on murals.  They could be on movable panels instead of on walls.  Our artists completed three outdoor murals this summer and we would enjoy designing and painting indoor murals for the winter.

One of our artists has sent in a proposal to the city on a building that might be available and could be used as an art center. Stay tuned . . .
