Bluebird - Painting from a Nature Photograph
Painting from a Nature
Photograph
If you are choosing to paint from a
photograph, there are some points to keep in mind. Shoot the photographs with
the image of the painting you want to create. Capture all the details as a
reference for your artwork. If it’s not the “perfect” photo, you can still take
whatever you want from it. You’re the artist!
When photographing outside early morning
or afternoon is the best time to capture your subject.
The example I’m showing today is a
photograph of a bluebird on its nest at the Massabesic Audubon Center. With
patience and a telephoto lens, I was able to capture this beautiful bird on its
nest as the main focus for my painting. I left the background without “clutter”
so it wouldn’t detract from my subject.
If you are photographing flowers, be sure
to include the stems, leaves, buds as flowers as well as the back of the
flowers for color and lighting references.
I hope you enjoy my work and look forward
to continuing to blog more photographic tips to capture animals, people, etc.
Until the next time,
Shirley Perry
Blog note: Thank you Shirley for the guest post. Shirley is an experienced photographer and a new painter. She is enjoying her painting lessons with Anthony Williams at Hobby Lobby.

Good news for spring projects:
We have a commitment (and a donation) for a mural on a
building on Union Street. The mural area
of the wall is 30’ long X 3’ high. We
are accepting donations for this project at this time. Anthony Williams will be in charge of the
design and supervision of the painters.
We will be starting the design work this month and hope to do the
cleaning up and priming of the wall in the spring. The actual painting of the mural will probably
be done in the late spring or early summer.
We have several artists who will be painting as well as
two charter schools and their students who will be helping out. Please consider making a donation with Paypal
or by check to cover the costs of supplies for this project. Thank you.
Our winter project for Families in Transition has been
completed and all the paintings were delivered to them for their men’s
residence. They will be having a
reception for us when they have completed some interior work in the residence
and have our paintings on the walls.

The artist poses for a dashing photograph in front of a
jolly Frosty the Snowman painted on a piece of slate. His watercolor of a

Our weekend painters
Some
of our members participated in the Art in Action event in Londonderry, NH over
the weekend. This was held in two different buildings, Mack’s Apples and Shady
Hill Nursery.
On the left: Frank
Moulin and some of his beautiful watercolors.
Debbie Curtin looked like she was having fun talking to everyone.
Anthony
Williams (our vice president) and author Joe Smiga enjoyed their conversation
too. These photos were taken in the
greenhouse by our treasurer, Linda Feinberg.
Some of Anthony's paintings.
And a reminder: Our second project with Families in
Transition is going forward and we have six artists committed to paint. We have one more canvas available. This will be similar to our last project with
FIT except that we will be painting the canvases for their men’s residence this
time. Contact treasurer Linda Feinberg
if you would like more information.
Update: 11/12/13: the last canvas has been spoken for. Please contact Linda if you would like to be on the list for the next project.

Anthony Williams
Anthony Williams has been an artist in New Hampshire
for many years, and has painted murals all over Manchester and one in Nashua at
the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter. In Manchester, he's worked with inner city
youth through a program called Eagle Eyes, graffiti artists
painting negative graffiti to change their mindset and do some murals together
in approved spaces to show that they can do work for positive reasons. The hope
is to curtail vandalism while giving young people a constructive way to express
themselves.
He has placed
20+ 'movable' murals in public areas in the city. He painted and oversaw the
development of several murals covering the walls in an area of town referred to
as Cat Alley among many other projects.
He recently finished the
Mural on the Homestead Restaurant's Silo in Merrimack.
Anthony is both a commercial
painter and also a fine artist working in both watercolors and acrylics. He is
the inspiration for bringing together artists and those interested in art to
form “Friends of Art Manchester”. We
hope to have more art downtown and involve more children with art.
Friends of Art is currently partnering with LibertyHarbor Academy and Anthony for a fall project (possibly two).
Anthony will be working with the students on creating a mural for their
cafeteria space.
